E2-D2 EFFORT

Welcome to E2-D2 (Environmental Effects & Dredging and Disposal). E2-D2 is a literature database comprised of technical references covering a diverse range of topics related to environmental effects of dredging and dredged material disposal projects. Much of the technical literature pertaining to dredging and dredged material disposal is found in the "gray" literature, i.e., non-peer-reviewed federal or state agency publications, or proceedings of symposia and specialty conferences. Many other studies of dredging operations are documented in the form of unpublished contract reports frequently held in project files rather than libraries or archives. Consequently, assimilating existing knowledge on any given aspect of dredging-induced environmental effects can be a daunting task.

A primary objective of E2-D2 is to facilitate searches for relevant references by providing a single source for this diffuse gray literature as well as important references in the peer-reviewed literature. A second objective is to make this information accessible to all interested parties, both within and outside of the Corps of Engineers. Accessibility is the underlying reason for locating this database on the Internet.

As currently configured, E2-D2 contains approximately three thousand references. These represent only a relatively small fraction of the total number of references available. Certain key reports and publications were deliberately included in this first working compilation, e.g., the Corps' Dredged Material Research Program (DMRP) series, which was concluded in 1979, the Disposal Area Monitoring System (DAMOS) series, and the Environmental Effects of Dredging Technical Notes, which are both ongoing. The database focuses on broad topics, such as beneficial uses of dredged material and effects of sediment resuspension and sedimentation on aquatic organisms and their habitats.

The database allows the user to perform simple queries for authors, titles, years, publications, conferences, journals, and keywords. Instructions are provided throughout the database.
